Description:

In this poster I present the role of ecological sustainability in library buildings. Based upon a concept paper for a new sustainable library storage building a student group developed for a University library in Berlin, I will take a closer look at several important aspects of sustainability. From our findings with regard to the new building, we will develop new guidelines to be adapted to already existing library buildings – some of them very easily adoptable, others only with extensive efforts.  Sustainability as a concept, with its three pillars comprised of ecology, economy and sociology, will be briefly introduced as the underlying concept of this work. Aspects like energy use, building materials and certification programs will be examined. The poster will give an overview why a green library is not only good for our environment but also for the library as an organization itself.
