In this paper we present the role of ecological sustainability in library buildings. Based upon a concept paper for a new sustainable library storage building we developed for a University library in Berlin, we will take a closer look at several important aspects of sustainability. From our findings with regard to the new building, we will develop new guidelines to be adapted to already existing library buildings – some of them very easily adoptable, others only with extensive efforts. Sustainability as a concept, with its three pillars comprised of ecology, economy and sociology, will be briefly introduced as the underlying concept of this work. Aspects like energy use, building materials and certification programs will be examined. The results will be assessed for the adaptation of the renovation of existing buildings. During the project it became clearer and clearer how necessary it is to act ecological sustainably, especially in times of climate change. The library with its important role of acting as an example in society has to assume a leader function in this development, too. As a public and academic place, it has the possibility to set a good example and develop awareness for such topics and problems in its patrons’ mind to raise consciousness for this problem. This means the future task for librarians is to set an example by acting sustainably and providing a sustainable and healthy workplace. The easiest way to do that is to provide an environmentally friendly building where patrons can learn and work.
